Frequently Asked Questions
How strong is biotip?
Biotip tippet is as strong as regular tippet. For example, Bioptip 5XB is equal in tensile strength to a regular 5X.
What does the "B" in the size mean, and why do you have it?
The "b" stands for "biodegradable". We use our special size system so you can be assured of strength. biotiptippet is slightly bigger than regular tippet, so if you compare a 5X tippet to our 5XB tippet, it will be a little bigger. However, the strength will be identical. To make it easy for you to find the strength you need, we kept the numbers the same.
How is the visibility?
Biotip tippet is low visibility, comparable to fluorocarbon. The fish won't see you coming!
Biodegradable sounds good, but...will this tippet suddenly fall apart? Or disappear?
The short answer? Nope. For starters, Biotip doesn't start to biodegrade while it is still in the package. Next, Biotip holds up great for 18-24 months on your reel. Finally, if your line is lost, Biotip is engineered to degrade within approximately 5-7 years. For example, it will slowly degrade in the water or soil over those years.
How long will biotip last?
Biotip doesn't start to biodegrade while it is still in the package. On your reel, Biotip holds up great for 18-24 months.
Is Biotip degrading in the package before it's even opened?
Short answer, nope. Biotip doesn't start to biodegrade while it is still in the package.
For best results, keep Biotip sealed in the package until you are ready to use it.
Is your packaging also environmentally-friendly?
Yes, it sure is! Biotip's packaging is 100% biodegradable or compostable. Even the spool is 100% biodegradable.
What am I sacrificing by using biodegradable tippet?
Not a darn thing. Biotip delivers fantastic strength, zero water absorption, low visibility (comparable to fluorocarbon), shock absorption, UV and abrasion resistance, and excellent knot strength. Fly fish with Biotip and you won't know the difference - but the planet will!
What exactly is it made of?
Good question! Biotip is made from a proprietary polymer designed to biodegrade and/or compost safely in the environment. In other words, our "secret recipe" for fishing line is made of good stuff!
Is Biotip used for anything else?
Yes, we are proud to say that our Biotip technology is also being used for ghost nets in Norway and Korea, helping to make a positive impact on the environment.
